Type 1 diabetes makes up about 10% of patients with diabetes. Type 1 diabetes causes the loss of insulin producing cells. Early signs of type 1 diabetes is sensitivity to insulin and can affect children as well as adults, but has been given the name of juvenile diabetes as it seems to affect children more.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form, affecting almost 90% of all diabetes patients. It is due to defective insulin secretion and a defective response to insulin. There has been a strong association with type 2 diabetes and obesity and aging, altho children and adolescents are now getting this type of diabetes on a larger scale.
Type 3 diabetes or gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy and is only temporary. Gestational diabetes can do harm to fetus.
Diabetes is a chronic illness but treatable and managable.
